Travel Cable Retractor

The travel cable compactor is an interchangeable cable organizer that fits easily in your bag wherever you're going. With a single click, it uses springs to retract the cables into the organizer, making it nearly instant to organize all your cables before you leave.

Quick Start

The way that this project works uses 2 types of springs. A clock spring, and a compression spring.

The clock spring goes in the middle compartment in the project, while the compression spring goes between the locking mechanism and the bottom component.

Design your own cable winder!

In order to make your own cable winder, make sure you have the following and proceed with the building instructions:

Item

Quantity

3D Printed Parts

1 of each part

3" Rotor Spring

1 spring

8mm length 3mm OD Compression spring

1 spring

Cable of your choice

1 cable

Insert the rotor spring to the inside of the turning mechanism

Add the turning mechanism
to the bottom base

Add the locking mechanism model. Keep in mind that the locking mechanism in front of this image has a bump, meaning it is impossible to insert. In the actual 3D Print, however, there is a seperate version that doesn't have this bump.

Add your compression spring

Insert the top piece, and add your cable!

Keep in mind that the top piece has some resistance so it stays on top during travel and lets you swap your cable by removing it.

And voilá! You are done your cable retractor! :D

Future improvements

For the future, I want to remove all uses of things like a rotary spring and a compression spring, and design them myself to make this truly 100% 3D printed!
