This simple 3D-printed magic trick uses no mechanisms, magnets, or moving parts. The magic is all in where you place your hand.

The card has two different sides and, depending on which part you cover with your hand, you can create different illusions:

  • One side can appear to be the 1 or 3 of Diamonds.

  • Turn it over and it can appear to be the 4 or 6 of Diamonds.

The secret is very simple: in some cases you cover a diamond, while in others you cover an empty space. Our brain fills in the missing information and automatically interprets the card differently.

There are no hidden parts, magnets, or electronics. Just an intelligent arrangement of the diamonds and the position of your hand.

It is a small magic accessory that is easy to print and great fun for surprising family and friends. Kids especially love seeing it and then showing it to everyone else.

Show them the card, cover one of the positions with your hand, and ask:

“What card is it?”

Then change the position of your hand and ask again.

The card appears to have changed right before their eyes.

Can you figure out how it works?

Printing tips:

Print in PLA with 10 or more bottom and top layers so that the diamonds on the other side do not show through.
