CUBIC 9 — A 3D Printable Brain-Teasing Puzzle

Welcome to Cubic 9, a fully original 3D-printable puzzle designed to challenge your spatial thinking, patience, and problem-solving skills.

Cubic 9 is made up of 9 individual pieces that need to be combined into a complete puzzle. Each piece has its own shape and arrangement, meaning that simply trying to force the pieces together will not get you very far. The real challenge is figuring out how the pieces interact with each other and discovering the correct solution.

The puzzle is designed to be simple to print, easy to handle, and challenging to solve. It is a great little project for anyone who enjoys brain teasers, mechanical puzzles, 3D printing, or simply trying to solve something that looks easier than it actually is.

I designed Cubic 9 from scratch and then printed and tested the finished model to make sure the pieces work together as intended.

🧩 THE CHALLENGE

The objective of Cubic 9 is straightforward:

Fit all 9 pieces together and solve the puzzle.

Although the pieces may look simple individually, their shapes are designed to make the final assembly more challenging. You may need to rotate, reposition, and experiment with different combinations before finding the correct arrangement.

There is no need for complicated mechanisms or additional hardware. Everything you need for the puzzle is contained within the 9 printable pieces.

Try solving it without looking at the solution first!

And if you manage to solve it, try taking it apart and solving it again. Once you know the solution, you might think it is easy—but putting the pieces together again without checking can still be surprisingly challenging.

🔷 WHY "CUBIC 9"?

The name Cubic 9 comes directly from the design of the puzzle.

"Cubic" refers to the fact that the pieces are constructed using cube-based geometry.

"9" has two meanings:

  • The basic cubes used in the design are 9 × 9 × 9 mm.

  • The complete puzzle contains 9 individual pieces.

So the name Cubic 9 represents both the cube-based design and the 9-piece structure of the puzzle.

🖨 PRINTING

Cubic 9 was designed with 3D printing in mind.

The parts are intended to be printed without supports at the recommended sizes. However, support requirements can change depending on how much you scale the model.

Support requirements depend on the size:

  • Normal/recommended size: Supports should generally not be required.

  • Smaller versions: Supports should generally not be necessary, although your printer and slicer settings can affect the result.

  • Larger versions: Some parts may require supports, depending on how much you enlarge them.

  • Very large versions: Support requirements can become more significant because the geometry is being scaled along with the model.

In other words, the need for supports depends on the size you choose to print.

I recommend printing the model at its original/recommended size first before experimenting with larger scales.

⚙ DESIGN & TESTING

Cubic 9 isn't just a theoretical model.

I designed the puzzle, prepared the parts for printing, printed the complete set, and tested the puzzle with 4 different people to make sure the pieces work together as intended and that the puzzle provides a proper challenge.

The goal throughout the design process was to create something that is:

Simple to print → Simple to understand → Challenging to solve

The cube-based construction also makes the puzzle visually clean and gives the pieces a consistent geometric appearance.

📏 SCALING

One of the advantages of Cubic 9 is that you can experiment with different sizes.

You can scale the model up or down in your slicer, but keep in mind that changing the scale can also change the printing requirements.

When making the model larger, overhangs and other geometric features become larger as well, which means that supports may become necessary.

When making the model smaller, some features can become more difficult to print accurately depending on your printer's capabilities.

For the best experience, I recommend starting with the original size.

🎯 WHO IS IT FOR?

Cubic 9 is made for anyone who enjoys:

🧩 Brain-teasing puzzles
🧠 Spatial thinking challenges
🖨 3D printing
🔷 Geometric designs
⚙ Mechanical-style puzzles
🎮 Small hands-on projects
🎁 Printable gifts and desk toys

It can also be a fun project to print for friends or family and challenge them to solve it without showing them the solution.

💡 MY DESIGN PHILOSOPHY

With Cubic 9, I wanted to create something that doesn't need electronics, complicated mechanisms, or a huge number of parts to be interesting.

Just 9 pieces.

The idea is to take a very simple geometric concept and turn it into something that makes you stop, think, rotate the pieces around, try another combination, and eventually have that "WAIT… THAT FITS!" moment.

📦 FUTURE PLANS — CUBIC 9 POCKET CASE

A future update I may make for Cubic 9 is a small, 3D-printable carrying case designed specifically for the puzzle.

The idea is to make Cubic 9 portable enough to carry in a pocket, while keeping all 9 pieces safely together.

The case could feature:

  • 🧩 A dedicated space for all 9 Cubic 9 pieces

  • 🔒 A secure lid to help prevent the pieces from falling out

  • 🔷 "CUBIC 9" embossed or engraved on the outside

  • 📏 A compact design made for easy carrying

  • 🖨 A fully 3D-printable construction

This won't be part of the initial release, but I may design and test it as a future Cubic 9 accessory/update.

The goal would be to turn Cubic 9 into something you can solve at home, take with you, and challenge your friends with anywhere. 😎🧩

🏆 FINAL NOTES

Cubic 9 is a fully designed, printed, and tested 3D-printable puzzle made to be both accessible to print and enjoyable to solve.

If you print it, I would love to see your makes, photos, remixes, and feedback!

And most importantly...

Don't give up if you can't solve it immediately. 😉

Good luck, and have fun with Cubic 9! 🔷🧩
