A minimalistic, louvered solar radiation shield (Stevenson screen) designed for the BME280 temperature and humidity sensor.

It mounts directly onto the window frame and rubber seal—no screws, tape, or glue required. Designed to be universal for standard windows with flexible rubber gaskets.

Features

  • Non-invasive mount: Snaps securely onto the window seal without damaging the frame.

  • Louvered design: Protects the sensor from direct rain and solar radiation while maintaining free airflow for accurate measurements.

  • Fast & lightweight print: Uses only ~30g of filament depending on the version.

Optimal Placement

  • Orientation: Always mount on the North side (or North-East) of the building. Direct sunlight heating the window glass or the plastic housing will heavily distort temperature readings regardless of shade design.

  • Position on the window: Mount near the lower corner of the frame. Heat escaping through the window pane rises upward, so positioning the sensor near the top or center of the sash exposes it to warm convective currents.

Available Versions

  • SHORT (2 cm offset): Compact and low-profile. Best for tight spaces or aesthetic preference. On calm, windless days, escaping building heat may cause a reading offset of 1-3°C.

  • MEDIUM (10 cm offset): The recommended sweet spot. Clears the window's boundary thermal layer so thermal bleed is negligible while maintaining good rigidity.

Bill of Materials (BOM)

  • BME280 sensor board

  • 2x small zip-ties to secure the sensor and wiring inside

  • ~30–45g Filament (PETG or ASA/ABS)

Print Settings & Recommendations

  • Material: PETG or ASA / ABS (do not use PLA; it deforms in summer heat and degrades in sunlight).

  • Color: White is mandatory to reflect solar radiation and prevent false high-temperature spikes.

  • Supports: Organic / Tree supports everywhere.

  • Infill: 10–15%.

  • Solid Layers (Bottom): 5 layers

Planned Updates & Future Improvements

  • Integrated cable management: Dedicated routing channels and zip-tie points for cleaner wire egress.

  • Mass reduction: Cored-out central mounting block to further decrease print time and material usage.

  • Aesthetic refinements: Smoother overhang transitions on the external louvre supports.
