I discovered this magic trick online a while ago and wanted to learn how to do it. Based on the videos I found, I’ve recreated the trick the way I believe it is performed.

The trick involves a pen passing through a box, with the unique feature that the center of the box is completely empty. It is a very simple trick, yet it can be striking the first time you see it and leaves you wondering how it’s done.

Print settings

The entire project is designed to be printed in PLA using a 0.4mm nozzle and a 0.2mm layer height.

All parts are printable, and no additional materials are required.

Glue is not necessary, though this may vary if the parts do not fit snugly. I used a prusa XL with the default settings.

Assembly instruccions

Step 1

Place the springy as shown in the image. No glue is needed.

The spring allows the mechanism to automatically return to its original position once we stop operating it.

Step 2

Install the mechanism. Make sure the spring engages with the mechanism.

Here you can see how the trick works. The pen moves the mechanism, causing the tip of the fake pen to emerge from the other side. What really makes the effect work is the thinness of the box's sides where the two parts of the mechanism connect; it is so thin that it looks as if there is nothing there.

I recommend printing the entire mechanism in black and painting the faux pen section the same color as the actual pen; this helps the piece blend in better within the holes. If you don't have a multi-color printer, print the entire piece in the same color as the pen.

Step 3

Position the lid box as shown in the image. This part must move freely.

The box lid conceals the fake pen, revealing it only when we push.

Step 4

Position the top box in the correct orientation. If the part does not fit snugly, I recommend using glue, taking care not to bond any of the moving parts.

Step 5

Place the pen cap on the top. Use glue if it doesn't fit properly.

Step 6

Insert the pen cap through the pen body; this piece must slide freely.

This piece is essential for the trick. It allows us to create the illusion of inserting the pen into the box, while actually sliding the piece itself; you will need to practice making it look like you are inserting the pen while concealing the action with your hand and arm. It is also the piece that triggers the mechanism when it reaches the box.
