I have just done a major update to the design and all the files to fix some missing details needed for the competition entry (10 Sept 2026)
Introducing the Framework Laptop 12 Field Case - a weather proof utility computer using the motherboard and battery from the original laptop and creating a portable case with storage for expansion cards, cables and hardware.
The case is designed similar to popular Pelican or Tactix hardcases with a toggle latch, hinges, dust seal and corner bumpers. There is also allowance for M4 threaded inserts to be pressed into the base for extra fixing points.
The battery is mounted in the base, with the motherboard fastened above. I have designed a conceptual jumper cable to bridge the connectors.
The sides of the case feature TPU covers that can be pulled out so that expansion cards can be inserted, depending on what functions are needed. There is also additional storage sections in the base for tools and hardware, along with TPU caps to stop anything falling out.
The inside of the lid features TPU sleeves that allow various expansion cards to be stored when not in use, along with a sleeve to hold data and power cables.
While the model can be printed with the MMU, it is not necessary, and can be easily printed with a single material machine by simply deleting the text bodies.
There is some additional fasteners required:
(2x) M3 x 6mm CSK bolts (for fastening the audio and power expansion cards together)
(2x) M3 x 25mm button head bolts (to fasten the latch halves together)
(2x) M3 x 10mm button head bolts (to bolt the motherboard brackets to the base case)
(2x) M3 x 25mm knurled thumb screws (for fixing the audio and power cards to the base case)
(2x) M4 x 60mm button head bolts + lock nuts + (4x) washers (rear case hinges)
(2x) M4 x 25mm bolts (to fasten the latch to the case base)
(2x) M3 threaded inserts (for the thumb screws to fasten into to hold the audio + power cards)
(4x) M4 threaded inserts (optional) (additional fixing points on bottom of case)
(14x) M2 threaded inserts (throughout the base to mount battery and motherboard to)
Materials:
The corner bumpers, sleeves, side caps and dust seal - 95A TPU (natural shown in the renders).
The lid and base case - PLA or PETG. CF-PLA or CF-PETG would be desirable. (Anthracite grey + orange shown in the renders).
The toggle latch - PLA or PETG. CF-PLA or CF-PETG would be desirable. (Matte black shown in the renders).
