I have several projects related to the garage door and all of them need to know whether the door is opened or closed.

Status sensing system parts

  • Sensor wall mounting base

  • Sensor arm

  • Door magnet mounting base

  • Magnet extension rod

  • Magnet arm

  • Various M3 screws, washers and nuts to connect the component parts

  • Wood screws to mount the sensor base to the wall

  • 14 mm x 5 mm disc rare earth magnet, glued in place using superglue

  • A3144 Hall Effect sensor glued in place using UV resin glue

  • Reused USB cable (ends cut off)

  • 3M super strong double-sided tape (black with red backing)

Printed using QIDI Plus4 printers.

  • Blue parts using PLA at 0.20 mm "Standard" resolution

  • White parts using TPU at  0.24 mm "Draft" resolution

The Hall Effect sensor outputs an open-collector (ground-only) signal when the magnet is detected. A 10K pull-up resistor is used to make this an effective digital signal for use with microcontrollers.

Example Upcoming Projects:

  • ✅ Display a light indoors when the door is open via 433.92 MHz transmission

  • Outside mounted RFID opener / closer

  • Automatically close the door if left open past a certain time of night using an RTC

  • Remotely close the door using DTMF commands via ham radio
