A Pythagorean cup is a special drinking vessel designed to demonstrate the principle of a siphon.
Inside the cup, there is a hidden central column containing a curved tube. As long as the liquid level stays below the top of this tube, the cup works like a normal drinking cup.
However, if the cup is filled above a certain level, the liquid enters the siphon tube. Gravity then causes the siphon to start working, and the liquid is drawn out through a hole in the bottom of the cup.
Once the siphon starts, it continues draining the cup until almost all of the liquid has flowed out.
The cup is traditionally associated with the ancient Greek philosopher and mathematician Pythagoras. According to legend, it was designed to teach moderation: if a person becomes too greedy and fills the cup too much, they lose everything.
