Nexus Pecuniae - The NFC Coin for Digital Payments

Inspired by the look of a Euro coin, this dual-color model combines a familiar design with modern NFC technology. An NFC tag can be embedded directly into the coin, allowing users to open a stored URL with a simple tap of their smartphone.

The Latin inscription "Nexus Pecuniae" roughly translates to "Connection Through Money" or "Link for Payments". It reflects the purpose of the coin: providing a simple bridge between people and modern digital payment services.

Why Use an NFC Coin?

The idea is simple: instead of searching for usernames, sharing QR codes, or typing long links, you can hand someone a fancy physical NFC token.

Perfect for situations such as:

  • Splitting the cost of a pizza order at work

  • Collecting money for group purchases

  • Shared restaurant bills

  • Club or community events

  • Carpool expenses

  • Flea markets and conventions

  • Donations and tips

  • Personal networking

With a quick tap, the coin can open a payment app, website, contact card, or virtually any other online destination. Even Rickroll dQw4w9WgXcQ 🤡

Compatible Services

The NFC tag can point to any URL, including services such as:

  • PayPal

  • Wero

  • Revolut

  • Wise

  • N26

  • Banking payment links

  • Donation pages

  • ...

PayPal Users

For PayPal users, a PayPal.Me link is not required.

You can either store:

  • Your PayPal.Me URL

  • The URL contained in a personal PayPal QR code

This allows the coin to work even if you do not use PayPal.Me. Simply write the desired URL to the NFC tag, and a smartphone will open the corresponding PayPal payment page when the coin is tapped.

NFC Tag Integration

The model is specifically designed to permanently encapsulate an NFC tag inside the coin. The included NFC cavity is designed for a NTAG215 or NTAG216 tag. The tag can be programmed using any NFC writing app and can store payment links, digital business cards, websites, social media profiles, or any other NFC-compatible data.

The included 3MF file already contains:

  • A negative cavity for the NFC tag

  • A preconfigured print pause

  • Color assignments for dual-color printing

When the print pauses, simply place the NFC tag into the designated recess and resume printing. The remaining layers will securely seal the tag inside the coin.

Multi-Color and Single-Extruder Printing

Multi-Material Systems

The model is ready for printing with systems such as:

  • INDX

  • Prusa MMU

  • Bambu Lab AMS

  • Other multi-material solutions

The included 3MF file already contains the required color setup (for PrusaSlicer).

Single Extruder Printers

For users without a multi-material system, all parts are also included as separate objects.

This allows you to:

  • Print individual color parts separately

  • Assemble the finished coin after printing

  • Maintain the same NFC tag integration as the multi-color version

Print Recommendations

Recommended materials:

  • PLA / PLA+

  • Silk PLA for a metallic coin-like appearance

For the best reproduction of the fine lettering and decorative details, the following settings are recommended:

  • 0.15 mm layer height or finer

  • 0.25 mm nozzle recommended

A 0.25 mm nozzle combined with 0.15 mm layer height or finer produces significantly cleaner results. While a 0.4 mm nozzle can also print the model, the lettering will not appear as crisp.

Disclaimer

This model is intended as a practical and decorative way to share payment information, contact details, or other digital content through NFC technology. It is not an official currency, has no monetary value, and is not affiliated with any governmental, financial, or payment institution.

Enjoy printing and using your own NFC payment coin as a more memorable alternative to QR codes and paper notes 😊
