Great Spotted Woodpecker — low poly
A low-poly great spotted woodpecker, standing on its own two feet. No base, no stand.
The bird prints as one piece, 97 × 48 × 85 mm. The soles are flat ellipses with toe lobes and sit directly on the bed, and the centre of mass is inside the sole outline, so it stands without any help. The tail is thick and angled backwards. It works as a kickstand if you bump the model.
I designed the beak, legs and tail on the heavy side on purpose. My first version had thin ones, and they snapped when I removed the printing supports.
Print settings
0.2 mm layers, 0.4 mm nozzle, 3 perimeters
15 % infill is plenty
Tree supports needed for the belly, wing tips and tail tip. Everything else grows upwards from the soles.
No brim needed; the soles give about 255 mm² of bed contact.
Smallest features (beak tip, claws, tail tip) are 2 mm, so nothing here is fragile.
I modelled it in Blender with a Python script (generated by prompting Claude Opus 5 High), so the proportions, body pitch, and stance width are parametric. Scaling in the slicer works fine down to about 70 % before the beak gets too small.
