3D Printed Stained Glass Sunflower
This sunflower was created with My App Extrudel’s Stained Glass Generator. The model uses a separate lead-style frame and individually printable color inserts, allowing the finished piece to look like stained glass without requiring a multicolor printer.
Each group of similarly colored inserts can be printed together. The inserts press into the frame from the back and can be secured with a small amount of CA glue. The open back allows light to pass through translucent filament.
Printing
Print the lead frame with its rounded face against the build plate.
Print the colored inserts flat.
Translucent or transparent filament works best for the inserts.
The frame can be printed in black, dark gray, silver, or another lead-like color.
No supports should be required.
A smooth build plate will produce the cleanest visible surface.
Assembly
Test each insert before applying glue.
Place the frame face down.
Install the inserts from the back.
Apply a very small amount of CA glue around the back edges.
Allow the glue to cure before moving or displaying the piece.
The included 3MF retains the insert positions and color information, making it easier to identify and arrange the pieces.
This model was physically printed and fully assembled to verify the frame, retaining lip, and insert clearance. Individual printer and filament tolerances can still vary, so printing a small test piece first is recommended.
