A fine trackball companion accessory for a keyboard, like the Logitech MX Mechanical keyboard; when a mouse isn't good enough... Or a simple pointing device for a driving sim rig.
Required hardware:
1 x Logitech M240 Compact Silent Bluetooth wireless mouse; to be taken apart.
1 x 34mm/1.34in trackball ball.
3 x 3/8 inch (9.525mm) steel bearing balls (commonly used for marble races).
4 x Flat head M3 x 4mm screws.
Print one of each of the Base, Plate, and Cover parts. Print the Base part with supports for the leaf springs. Print Plate, and Cover parts without supports.
Important
Before assembly, it is highly recommended to pair the Logitech M240 mouse with the computer. The pairing button is concealed after trackball assembly. Pairing the mouse again after assembly requires removing the board to be able to access the pairing button. A remix to resolve this problem is most welcome...
Assembly
Insert the bearing balls into the appropriate holes in the Cover part. They should pop into place.
Place the trackball ball into place on the Cover part. It should pop into place over the previously inserted bearings balls, and it should roll freely.
Take apart the Logitech M240 mouse. Carefully extract the logic board, and keep the screw that fastens it. Remove the scroll wheel.
Mount the mouse board on the Plate part in accordance with the alignment pins. Ensure the battery leads are appropriately positioned in the battery box. Fasten the board to the Plate part with the screw. See photos for assembly hints.
Use the 4 flat head M3 x 4mm screws to fasten the Cover part to the Plate part.
Insert the Plate part hinge stays into the Base plate hinge bumps.
Insert one AA battery.
Test that moving the trackball moves the mouse, and that pressing the top of the trackball shell generates a mouse click.
Vertical Trackball Motion is Inverted
Because the mouse board is flipped, the mouse cursor moves the opposite of the desired direction in the vertical axis. Fixing this on Windows and Mac requires a custom mouse driver to flip the direction. Unfortunately, signing such a driver for Windows costs a small fortune in fees. On Linux, mouse direction is configurable.
A workaround Python script is available for Windows with no implied tech support. It uses a separate BLE dongle, Google's Bumble project, and the Python Mouse project to communicate directly with the trackball and to move the Windows mouse cursor in software. Usage of the script is left as an exercise for the user.
