This model is a variation of my 4 wheeler Bond Bug with cut-down rear bodywork and the canopy. I have seen a few original bugs with modified canopies and this is my conceptual idea. If anybody wants to modify their bug or make a new one like my design then please copy or modify as you please.
I have 3D printed and modelled my design in two different scales. 1/16th and 1/12th scale. The only parts which change when you change the scale are the doors and canopy. This is because I have used a a 16mm or 20mm M2 screw to attach the doors. The rest of the model is glued together using appropriate glue for the PLA. The seat covers required bending to fit the bodyshell after the centre console is glued in. This is best done when the PLA is warm straight off the printer bed or use a hair dryer.
I have designed the rear body and rollbar to be replaceable with a conventional bug upper rear body and window so that a standard canopy design, as fitted on my other 4 wheeler design, can be used instead. A picture is included on my red 1/16th scale bug sport to show the conversion using an orange canopy. You can of course use any colour you like for the canopy and body.
The sport canopy has plastic sheet for the windows and a cutting template is provided. I have made them yellow to match the red and white colour scheme of the gold leaf Lotus 49 race car from the sixties.
Please note that the files are full scale. To print at 1/16th scale use 6.25% and for 1/12th scale use 8.33%
The chassis and wheels for this model are identical to the parts in my 4 wheeler bug design. The canopy will fit a three wheeler body. Removing the corner of the canopy to clear the front wheel arches isn't required to fit the three wheeler body. Please note a bit of filing is required to make the canopy hinge work properly. I have found that once you get the hinges in the body holes moving the canopy up and down polishes the PLA material and makes for a much smoother hinge action. A support could be used to keep the canopy up but I have found that the hinge friction is enough to keep it in place. If you break the hinge then you can always print another!
Good luck with your build. Please post up pictures of your models.
