CoolVibes – DIY Needle Pain Relief (Buzzy Bee Alternative)

🇬🇧 Description CoolVibes is an affordable, open-source, and fully 3D-printable alternative to the Buzzy® Bee needle pain relief device. I designed this project for my daughter, who has Type 1 Diabetes and needs her infusion sets and glucose sensors changed multiple times a week. While the original Buzzy Bee completely transformed our routine by eliminating her pain and anxiety, its high price tag (around €150) makes it inaccessible for many families. I believe that pain-free medical procedures for children should not be a financial privilege, which is why I created this DIY version. The device works based on the medically proven Gate-Control Theory. By combining high-frequency vibration with cold temperatures (via a standard gel ice pack), it stimulates the nerve pathways. This overloads the nervous system and blocks the pain signals from the needle before they reach the brain, reducing injection pain by 50% to 80%. The total cost for all electronic components and screws is under €10. The case is optimized for 3D printing and requires no supports. The bottom feature clips into place to securely hold standard small gel ice packs (like round kids' boo-boo packs).

📖 Anwendung / How to use

🇩🇪 Anleitung

🇬🇧 Instructions

  1. Preparation: Keep the gel ice packs in the freezer. Clip the frozen pack into the bottom of the device before use.

  2. Pre-cooling: Turn the device on and place it with the cooling side facing down directly onto the injection site for about one minute.

  3. Shifting: Then, flip the device and hold it just above the injection site (towards the heart/brain). The vibrations will continuously block the pain signals.

  4. Injection: Insert the sensor, infusion set, or needle directly onto the previously cooled spot.

  5. Turn off: Only remove the device from the skin and turn it off after the needle/sensor is successfully in place.

⚡ Bauanleitung / Assembly Instructions

  1. Insert nuts: Press the two M3 nuts into the recesses on the inside.

  2. Wiring: Press the rocker switch into the housing wall. Solder the red wire from the battery clip to one pin of the switch. Run an additional red wire from the switch's second pin to the motor's positive terminal (+). Solder the black wire (-) from the battery clip directly to the motor's negative terminal.

  3. Glue in the motor: Use a little hot glue to secure the vibration motor into its designated mounting slot. Ensure the gold eccentric weight can rotate freely!

  4. Close up: Connect the battery, place it in the center compartment, and fasten the bottom plate (cooling pad holder) using the M3 screws.
