Wick Pot Holder for Urine Cups (Asian Hornet / Vespa velutina Monitoring)

This 3D-printed mount is specifically designed for the monitoring and control of the invasive Asian Hornet (Vespa velutina). It serves as a stable base for a DIY wick pot, which allows beekeepers, conservationists, and authorities to determine the flight direction and flight duration of the hornets to locate nests effectively.

The holder accommodates a standard 125ml urine cup, which acts as a reservoir for the bait liquid. A strip of a common sponge cloth (kitchen wipe) is used as a wick, pushed through the lid. The bait evaporates evenly and provides a perfect landing and feeding surface for the hornets without any risk of insects drowning.

🛠 Features & Design

  • Optimized Post Mount: The integrated mounting holes are designed to screw the holder firmly to posts, wooden stakes, or fences, or to secure it to round and square poles using zip ties (cable ties).

  • Perfect Fit for 125ml Cups: Snug, wobble-free fit for widely available 125ml standard medical urine cups.

  • Secure Hold: Prevents the cup from tipping over or falling due to wind, weather, or birds.

  • Weatherproof & Robust: The design is optimized for long-term outdoor deployment.

🐝 Background: What is a Sponge Cloth Wick Pot?

A wick pot is an essential tool for Vespa velutina monitoring. A small slit is cut into the lid of the 125ml urine cup. A custom-cut strip of a sponge cloth is pulled through so that it dips into the liquid at the bottom and stands out as an absorbent feeding pad at the top.

The Monitoring Process:

  1. Hornets are attracted by the scent, land safely on the moist sponge cloth, and feed on the liquid.

  2. After feeding, they fly directly back to their nest.

  3. By timing (measuring the return time) and tracking the flight direction, the radius and precise location of the hornet's nest can be narrowed down accurately.

🖨 Print Settings (Slicing Recommendations)

  • Support: No Support – Designed to print easily without any support structures.

  • Material: PETG, ASA, or ABS (Do not use standard PLA, as it becomes brittle and warps under UV light and summer heat).

  • Infill: 15% – 25% (Gyroid or Grid for optimal stability).

  • Walls/Perimeters: 2 to 3 wall lines are completely sufficient for stable mounting tabs.

📦 Required Accessories for the Completed Wick Pot:

  1. This 3D print (holder)

  2. A standard urine cup with cap (125ml)

  3. A strip of a sponge cloth (used as a wick)

  4. Screws or zip ties for mounting to a post

  5. Bait liquid (e.g., a mixture of beer, white wine, and sugar/syrup or commercial attractants)

Note: Please respect local regulations and wildlife protection laws regarding monitoring in your region.
