Introduction

While searching online for ideas for my next game, I came across this ancient Viking game. What struck me most was that the two players do not start with the same number of pieces, nor do they share the same objective—unlike in chess.

I also want to mention that I’ve tried to give the game a Nordic feel by incorporating runes and elements typical of Nordic culture.

Rules

Tablut is a two-player strategy game. It is played on a 9×9 grid with 16 attackers, 8 defenders, and a king.

Objectives

The attackers must capture the king, while the defenders must ensure his escape by reaching one of the four corners of the board.

Set up

Players place their pieces in the starting positions. The attackers begin the game, and players then take turns moving a piece.

Movement

All pieces move in a straight line (horizontally or vertically) across as many empty squares as desired. They cannot move diagonally, jump over other pieces, or land on an occupied square. The central square, where the king starts, cannot be occupied by any piece.

Capturing

A piece is captured when it is trapped between two enemy pieces in the same row or column. Corners can also be used to capture pieces, acting as one side of the trap. Captured pieces are removed from the board.

Capturing the King

To capture the king, the attackers must surround him completely on all four sides (horizontally and vertically). If the king reaches one of the four corners, the defenders win. If the attackers capture the king, they win.
