Ocean Current & Friends|6 × 4 Seigaiha Hexagonal Charms

6 Text Designs × 4 Configurations = 24 Variations

About This Project

XD

🇬🇧 English

It all started with a simple idea: making a small charm featuring the Chinese characters 洋流 (Ocean Current).

But instead of creating just another embossed text tag, I wanted something with a complete visual identity—something suitable for everyday use and efficient batch printing.

The design incorporates Seigaiha (青海波), a traditional Japanese wave pattern.

Its overlapping semicircular waves symbolize continuity, peace, and enduring good fortune.

Combined with a pointed hexagonal silhouette inspired by traditional Japanese turtle-shell crests, double-line borders, and brush-style Chinese calligraphy, the design gradually took shape.

And then things got a little out of hand.

One text design became six.

Then came experiments with three-color and four-color printing, different center-panel configurations, embossing heights, and printing efficiency.

Eventually, the project evolved into:

6 text designs × 4 configurations = 24 possible combinations.

Apparently, when an engineer tries to make a simple charm, it inevitably turns into a design experiment. XD

🇬🇧 English

This collection features six different Chinese text designs inspired by local election campaigns, community-created slogans, and creative wordplay from different cities and counties in Taiwan.

The English descriptions represent the intended meanings rather than official campaign translations.

All six designs share the same geometric framework and Seigaiha wave pattern, creating a consistent visual identity while preserving their individual meanings.

This is an independently created collection and is not an official campaign product.

Four Design Configurations

Type

Colors

Center Panel

A

3 Colors

Solid

B

3 Colors

Open

C

4 Colors

Solid

D

4 Colors

Open

🇬🇧 English

Four configurations were developed to explore the balance between visual appearance, text readability, and printing efficiency.

The variations combine two color options—three or four colors—with two center-panel designs: solid or open.

The solid center panel provides a clean background for the Chinese calligraphy, improving readability.

The open version allows the wave pattern to interact more directly with the lettering, creating a more integrated composition.

The three-color and four-color versions also explore different visual effects and production efficiency.

These differences affect not only the appearance but also the geometry and printing behavior.

Each configuration has its own characteristics, and there is no single best version.

⚙ 針對 FDM 列印設計|Designed for FDM Printing

🇬🇧 English

This model was not created by simply converting an image into an STL file.

The design process started with 2D vector artwork, followed by DXF geometry preparation and 3D CAD modeling.

The geometry was developed with a standard 0.4 mm FDM nozzle in mind, particularly for the Chinese calligraphy, repeating wave patterns, and double borders.

The multicolor effect is achieved through different Z heights and scheduled filament changes.

No MMU or multi-tool system is required.

A regular single-nozzle FDM printer can produce the three-color and four-color versions using manual filament changes.

Original Prusa MK4

🇬🇧 English

Developed and sliced for the Original Prusa MK4.

Recommended settings:

  • Material: PLA

  • Nozzle: 0.4 mm

  • Layer Height: 0.20 mm

  • Supports: None

  • Orientation: Flat on the build plate

  • Color Changes: 2 for three-color versions, 3 for four-color versions

Use the color-change function in PrusaSlicer or your preferred slicer to schedule filament changes at the appropriate Z heights.

Due to the fine calligraphy strokes and detailed wave patterns, I recommend printing a small test batch before attempting full-plate production.

Batch Printing

3 Colors

23

4 Colors

23

🇬🇧 English

This collection was also designed with small-batch production in mind.

Using a staggered hexagonal arrangement, the Original Prusa MK4 build plate can accommodate:

23 charms per batch.

Estimated PrusaSlicer printing times:

Version

Quantity

Estimated Time

3 Colors

23 pieces

2 h 6 min

4 Colors

23 pieces

2 h 15 min

These are slicer estimates, excluding additional time for manual filament changes, removing finished parts, and preparing the next batch.

One important advantage of batch printing is that all 23 models share the same color-change heights.

In other words, printing more charms does not require additional filament changes for each individual piece.

This makes the design particularly suitable for producing small giveaways and sharing them with friends.

Final Words

🇬🇧 English

This project started with a simple idea:

Turning the Chinese characters "洋流" (Ocean Current) into a small charm inspired by traditional Japanese artwork.

What began as a single design gradually evolved into six text variations, four configurations, and an engineering experiment in multicolor FDM printing.

From visual composition and calligraphy details to embossing heights, color combinations, and batch printing efficiency, the design went through several rounds of refinement.

I hope you enjoy printing these charms as much as I enjoyed developing them.

Let creativity keep flowing, just like the ocean currents.
