🐾 Shetland Sheepdog

The Shetland Sheepdog is a small, agile herding dog from the Shetland Islands of Scotland, where it helped crofters herd and guard sheep, ponies, and poultry. Bred to work in a harsh, windswept landscape, it is quick, hardy, and remarkably intelligent.

Affectionately known as the Sheltie, the breed resembles a miniature Rough Collie but is a distinct breed of its own. Today, Shelties are admired as gentle, devoted companions and as stars of obedience, agility, and herding competitions.

🐶 Appearance & Personality

Coat: Long, straight, harsh outer coat over a dense, soft undercoat, with an impressive mane and frill. Colours include sable, tricolour, blue merle, and black and white.
Build: Small, well-balanced, and agile, slightly longer than tall.
Expression: Gentle, alert, and intelligent.
Face: Refined, wedge-shaped head with dark almond eyes and small ears that stand erect with tipped-over ends.
Tail: Long and well-feathered, carried low with a slight upward sweep.
Temperament: Shelties are loyal, affectionate, and eager to please. They are sensitive and often reserved with strangers, but playful and loving with their family.

🎾 Activity & Companionship

Shelties need daily exercise, such as brisk walks, running, and active play sessions.

They love agility, obedience, herding, fetch, and learning new tricks.

Their gentle, devoted nature makes them excellent family dogs, though they may try to herd running children.

Shelties are among the easiest breeds to train and respond beautifully to gentle, positive methods.

💪 Health & Care

Exercise: Moderate to High — daily activity and mental challenges keep them happy and well-behaved.
Coat care: Brushing once or twice a week, more often during seasonal shedding.
Diet: Quality food in measured portions, as Shelties can gain weight easily.
Health: Typical lifespan is 12–14 years. Common conditions include collie eye anomaly, hypothyroidism, dermatomyositis, and sensitivity to certain medications (MDR1). Regular veterinary care helps Shelties stay healthy and active.
