🐾 Scottish Terrier
The Scottish Terrier is a sturdy, independent little dog from the Highlands of Scotland, where it was bred to hunt foxes, badgers, and vermin among rocks and dens. Short legs, a strong body, and a fearless spirit made it ideally suited to digging and working underground.
Once known as the Aberdeen Terrier, the Scottie has long been one of the most recognisable terrier breeds. Today, it is admired for its dignified bearing, distinctive silhouette, and loyal, spirited personality.
🐶 Appearance & Personality
Coat: Hard, wiry outer coat over a dense, soft undercoat. Colours include black, wheaten, and brindle of any shade.
Build: Compact, short-legged, and surprisingly powerful, with heavy bone for its size.
Expression: Keen, sharp, and intelligent, framed by bushy eyebrows.
Face: Long head with a distinctive beard, small dark almond-shaped eyes, and small, pointed, erect ears.
Tail: Medium length, thick at the base and tapering, carried upright like a carrot.
Temperament: Scottish Terriers are confident, loyal, and often reserved with strangers. They are independent and determined, yet deeply affectionate with their own family.
🎾 Activity & Companionship
Scotties need daily walks and play to burn off their energy and stay fit.
They enjoy digging, sniffing, chasing toys, and earthdog activities that tap into their hunting instincts.
They make devoted family companions and do best with respectful children who understand their dignified nature.
Training should be patient, consistent, and positive, as Scotties have a famously independent mind.
💪 Health & Care
Exercise: Moderate — daily walks plus playtime keep them content and in good shape.
Coat care: Brushing a few times a week, with hand-stripping or clipping every few months.
Diet: Quality food in measured portions to maintain a healthy weight.
Health: Typical lifespan is 11–13 years. Common conditions include Scottie cramp, von Willebrand disease, bladder cancer, and craniomandibular osteopathy. Regular veterinary care helps Scotties stay healthy and lively.
