🐾 Miniature Schnauzer

The Miniature Schnauzer is a small, sturdy, and spirited dog that originated in Germany in the late nineteenth century. It was developed from the Standard Schnauzer, likely crossed with smaller breeds, to work as a farm dog and ratter that kept barns and stables free of vermin.

With its bushy beard and expressive eyebrows, the Miniature Schnauzer is instantly recognisable. Today, it is admired as a cheerful, loyal, and adaptable companion that fits well into city and country homes alike.

🐶 Appearance & Personality

Coat: A wiry, harsh outer coat with a soft, close undercoat that sheds very little. Colours include salt and pepper, black and silver, and solid black, with white also seen in some countries.
Build: Compact, robust, and nearly square in outline, with strong bones and a level back. It moves with a confident, balanced gait.
Expression: Keen, alert, and intelligent, framed by bushy eyebrows.
Face: A rectangular head with a long beard and whiskers, dark oval eyes, and ears that may be folded or cropped.
Tail: A high-set tail carried erect, which may be docked or natural depending on the country.
Temperament: Miniature Schnauzers are friendly, playful, and devoted to their families. They are alert watchdogs that are quick to bark, yet rarely aggressive.

🎾 Activity & Companionship

Miniature Schnauzers need regular daily walks and playtime to stay fit and content.

They enjoy fetch, agility, obedience, and exploring new places with their people.

Their affectionate, sociable nature makes them excellent family dogs that are usually good with children.

Training tends to go well with positive, consistent methods, as they are intelligent and eager to engage.

💪 Health & Care

Exercise: Moderate — daily walks plus games and mental challenges.
Coat care: Brushing a few times a week, with regular clipping or hand-stripping every few weeks.
Diet: A high-quality, low-fat diet, as the breed can be sensitive to rich foods.
Health: Typically lives 12–15 years. Common concerns include pancreatitis, hyperlipidemia, urinary stones, and cataracts. Regular veterinary care helps keep Miniature Schnauzers healthy and happy.
