🐾 Great Dane
The Great Dane is a giant, elegant dog breed developed in Germany, where it is known as the Deutsche Dogge. Despite its name, it has no Danish origins; it was bred by German nobility to hunt wild boar and later to guard estates and carriages.
Today the Great Dane is admired as the Apollo of Dogs, combining enormous size with grace, dignity and a famously gentle nature. It is a loving family companion often described as a true gentle giant.
🐶 Appearance & Personality
Coat: Short, thick and glossy. Colours include fawn, brindle, blue, black, harlequin and mantle.
Build: Giant, muscular and well balanced; males typically stand 76–86 cm or more at the shoulder.
Expression: Alert, kind and noble, with medium-sized dark eyes.
Face: A long, rectangular head with a deep muzzle and soft dropped ears, which are still cropped in some countries.
Tail: Long and tapering, hanging naturally and raised when the dog is excited.
Temperament: Friendly, patient and dependable, the Great Dane is devoted to its family. It makes a good watchdog but is rarely aggressive.
🎾 Activity & Companionship
Great Danes need moderate daily exercise, such as long walks and relaxed play.
They enjoy gentle games, strolls in the park and lounging comfortably with their family.
In family life they are affectionate, patient companions, though their size calls for supervision around small children.
Early socialisation and positive training are essential, as a grown Dane is far too big to drag along on a lead.
💪 Health & Care
Exercise: Moderate — daily walks, avoiding strenuous exercise around mealtimes.
Coat care: Weekly brushing keeps the short coat clean and shiny.
Diet: A high-quality giant-breed diet, fed in several smaller meals to help reduce the risk of bloat.
Health: Typically lives 7–10 years. Common concerns include bloat (gastric dilatation-volvulus), dilated cardiomyopathy, hip dysplasia and wobbler syndrome. Regular veterinary care helps these gentle giants live their best lives.
