It all started from this Hackaday post (https://hackaday.com/2022/05/01/bend-your-prints-to-eliminate-supports/). I found the idea fascinating, mainly because I was trying to print boxes with thin walls and openings and wasn't succeeding.
After a lot of try and error I got to a possible solution that wouldn't involve messing with the slicer but, instead, trick it to slice the first layer the way I wanted.
On the original post (https://x.com/SignalSkew/status/1519709107715981313) Chris shared the key to what I did. The problem was that it only worked with folding edges on one direction, so how would I do it with perpendicular folding edges?

I reproduced Chris idea with the cutting tool above. I only had to place it exactly in the place I wanted the folding edge to be.

With proper spacing between the ridges I would force the slicer to project parallel extruder lines to fill the gap between the small slits.

The good part is that this works in any direction, as long as the slicer believes that it must fill that space with parallel extrusion lines.

This box was designed on FreeCAD, and I used a Spreadsheet to store some details, like the layer height, nozzle width, number of perimeter walls, the width of the slits and some other stuff.
I tried to give access to every connection available on the board, but it's easy to adjust the model to give access only to specific connections, if you want to reduce the build of dust over the board.

This way I was able to parametrically design the box and the folding mechanism.

the files added here were designed to be printed with these parameters:

  • Layer Height: 0.2mm

  • Nozzle Size: 0.4mm

  • Perimeters: 4

  • Perimeter Generator: Classic (instead of Arachne)

The other parameters, not directly related to the slicer, but of interest are:

  • Slit Width: 0.4mm

  • Bottom and Walls Thickness: 2mm

The FreeCAD file is not completely ready to be shared, but I can add files created with different parameters, if anyone needs it.
