What:

  • Small Lamp using 16 (4x 4 LED Sections) WS2818B LEDs connected to ESP32 dev board and Holocron cover. The lamp is controlled through WLED and connected up to Alexa
  • Notes: The Holocron cover doesn't always print great, depends on printer settings, but with a little clean up works just fine. There is some soldering work however but pretty straight forward.

How:

  • Printer: Elegoo Netptue 2S
  • Nozzle: 0.4mm
  • Modelling Software: Fusion 360
  • Slicer: Cura Modified CHEP FF (0.28)
  • Filament: Overture PLA Black 1.75MM and Eryone Clear 1.75MM
  • Electronics: ESP32 Development Board, WS2812B LED Strip, M3 Screws, 22AWG Silicone Wire

Printing:

  • I used clear filament for the diffuser channels, diffuser covers, mounting brackets, and lamp diffuser
  • I used black for everything else

Installation (note: if really interested I could probably write more detailed instructions but here is the quick and dirty)

  • Cut 4 strips of 4 LEDS to fit individually into each LED channel
  • Solder the strips of LEDS together (about 2" wire length) and cover with heat shrink with nothing at the end and about 4-4.5" wire at the beginning (test regularly!!)
  • Insert the strips into LED channels and slide on the diffuser covers
  • Stand each of the 4 LED channels into the round mounting bracket with beginning cable coming out of center opening.
  • Attach the other mounting bracket to the top, optionally add the mounting bracket cover
  • Inset the mounting bracket into lamp base feeding the cable through the hole
  • Mount the ESP32 dev board to the ESP32 base using 2 m3 screws on the back.
  • Connect the wires to the VIN,GDN,D13 on ESP32 board (solder to the top or replace with 90 degree angled connector (e.g. JST)
  • Screw in the lamp base to the ESP32 base using 4 m3 screws
  • Put the diffuser cover on the lamp base
  • Put the holocron cover on the lamp base over the diffuser
  • Plug in the USB cable (note, I made sure to keep LEDS under limit for just a cheap USB plubg)
  • Go to install.wled.me and enjoy

Why:

  • Another project with my boys. They have been having fun building lightsabers, 3D models, etc and I have been getting back into some basic electronics to keep me sane. They all seemed pretty keen on designing some custom lamps use 3D printing and LEDs. I wanted to create something that I could swap out covers for and the first cover is a Star Wars Holocron "inspired" design.
