A triangular spool holder using wooden dowels seemed fun to deisgn and test to failure so I did. Here's the design I came up with. I made it so you didn't need to do any sawing because I can't saw straight.
Please print in the recommended upright orientation with 999 perimeters. This will give you optimal strength to withstand even four spools of metal filled filaments and rough treatment.
The design uses a 10 pack of 3/8" x 12" dowels from the craft store that go for ~$2 and a little bit of CA glue. Anything that sticks to PLA should be fine.
Wooden dowels have very poor tolerances! - Undersized dowels just need a little extra gluing and you're good, but OVERSIZED dowels can be solved by: 1. Print parts at 101% 2. Sand dowels 3. Aggressive drill usage on printed parts. I recommend choosing option #1 and learning from my mistakes. Drilling plastic is unfun.
