The Idea
More than a decade ago I got a wooden star puzzle that was forgotten for years (Source unknown), so I decided to model it in Fusion 360, a software I'm learning for my 3D printer Maker adventure.
I took a caliper, measured the lengths, added parameters using some trigonometry and digged into this adventure that now I'm now sharing with you.
The puzzle consists of 6 pieces that form an Escher's Solid that is part of a Rhombic Dodecahedron Stellations.
At the shops and internet you may find different variations of the wooden star puzzle under multiple names.
The variation I have includes a feature by cutting the external edge from the body to create a more realistic 3D star.
Filament Printing Instructions
This model does not require any special printing instructions, although I would advise to:
- Print at 0.2 layer height
- No need for supports
- You can print all pieces at once (same color) or print the pieces with different colors.
There are two versions of the model, one with big tolerance/clearance and a second one with small tolerance/clearance. The motivation: not all of us have the same quality printers and not all of us have the same printer calibration. Pick the version that suits you.
I printed using the following settings:
- Original Prusa Mini+
- eSUN PLA+ (6 different colors)
- 0.2mm layer height
- Prusa Slicer 2.4.2+Linux-x64-GTK3 using a eSUN PLA+ profile (modified from Generic PLA: 205C instead of 210C for Nozzle Other Layers temperature)
- 12% infill and Adaptive Cubic infill pattern.
Each piece has the following characteristics:
- 67.05 x 23.8 x 23.8 mm in size
- Takes 47 min to print
- Uses 3.3mt of filament (9.84 gram)
Note, you need 6 pieces, therefore multiply by 6 the numbers above.
