I used these with this m3 thumbscrew from user Parts Oven. As such, the “pan washers” are 18mm in diameter to match.

January 10, 2023: Added “m3-visor-index-anchor.stl”, which has a 2.6mm diameter hole. Hopefully this helps people who can't, or prefer not to use heatset inserts.

You'll need:

  • 8mm or 6mm m3 screws, depending on which thickness “pan washer” you use
  • m3 x 3mm x 5mm heatset insert.
    • You can use taller inserts if you wish, by increasing the height of the “lock” part

These are super simple, easy to print with all materials that will stick well to VHB.

They still print very quickly with 0.2 QUALITY.

  • Suggest 4 vertical perimeters for the heatset “lock” part.
  • Suggest bright colors for the guide / stop, and heatset “lock” part.
  • Suggest black or a darker color for the pan washer if you're concerned about it showing through your particular visor.
    • You can avoid this by cutting your visor oversized enough, if your helmet dimensions allow it.

The longer surface of these parts are 12mm to maximize the surface contact with ½" 3M / Scotch VHB double-sided tape.

I use the guide / stop piece, with the slope of the “ramp” facing the outside of the helmet to help “index” and hold a visor with a little flexibility. Sometimes I flip it over with the slope facing the inside of the helmet to provide a more precise hold of a sharper curve on the visor.

Then I place the heatset piece(s) to “lock” the whole assembly into position. Mandalorian visors have this “built in” near the bridge of the nose, due to their shape.

  • Keep this in mind for whatever helmet you're making, and create extra tabs or notches to provide one or more of these final “lock” positions, or minimize how many “stops” you require.
  • You may wish to increase / decrease the total amount of parts depending on how easily your visor material flexes.

I chose 3mm depth/height for the heatset “lock” part, since I wanted to keep these as shallow as possible with the most common m3 screw length I have - 8mm.

  • I used this and the 18mm D x 3mm H pan washers.
  • You could easily use 6mm m3 screws with some mix of shorter part and 1mm pan washers.
