Motive for creation

I purchased a laser cutter (Two Trees TS3) with a built-in air filter, but when cutting MDF, smoke leaked from the device within a few minutes of starting operation, and I could smell a pungent, irritating odor in my nose. MDF is pulp fiber glued together, and I suspect it is this glue that is causing the odor.
Deodorization is necessary because simply venting this awful smell out of the room would likely result in complaints from neighbors. When I looked into countermeasures, it seems that it is necessary to pass the exhaust through a large amount of activated carbon anyway. No wonder expensive deodorization equipment is sold with laser cutters. Since commercially available ones are expensive, I decided to make my own.

Trial and Error

Axial fan

At first, I made a deodorizer of the type to which a 120 mm square axial fan was attached, but since 1 kg of activated carbon was packed in the tube, the pressure loss was so high that no air flowed at all.

Blower

Next, I thought that I could use a blower used to blow away fallen leaves and water in the opposite direction for the deodorizer, but I found that this idea was not a good idea because the blower's continuous operation time is only 30 minutes.

Dry and wet vacuum cleaner

After much research, I finally found the following dual-use dry and wet vacuum cleaner. It was not at all necessary that it be able to suck in water, but it was the type that met the requirement of having a hose that could be connected to the exhaust as well as the intake section. Such vacuum cleaners typically have a power consumption of about 1,000W, but I did not want to trip the breaker, so I purchased a vacuum cleaner with a power consumption of about 600W. It is still able to exhaust air.

Structure that allows you to see the activated charcoal

I heard that the activated charcoal discolors as it is used, so I made it so that you can see it. The tube is double-layered with hexagonal holes. In between, I inserted Tamiya's "Fun Craft Series No.126 Transparent Plastic Sheets 0.2mm B4". The size of the tube is determined from this B4 size.

I opened a gap of 0.5mm for the thickness of 0.2mm, but it did not fit easily and I had a hard time assembling it. The attached gcode file has a gap of 0.5mm, but the step file has 1mm. Please use whichever you prefer.

Padding

I thought that purchasing 1 kg of activated carbon would be enough, but when I put it in the tube, it was not enough and there was a gap. It would be meaningless if the exhaust air could not pass through the activated carbon and escape through the gap, so I printed the padding and put it in. The model is just a cylinder, but I set the top and bottom layers to zero in the PrusaSlicer settings and the infill to gyroid so that the air can pass through while keeping the activated carbon from spilling out. I don't have the project file left so I can't attach it, but I believe I set the density to 5%. Use a matching height if needed.

Activated carbon used

I am using the following

I found a website that sells “activated carbon exclusively for laser machine exhaust”. I did not purchase it this time because of the large quantity, but I am interested in it.

Preventing activated carbon from spilling

In order to prevent activated carbon from spilling out while allowing air to pass through, a piece of non-woven fabric cut into a round shape is placed at the edge. One piece is not strong enough, so several pieces are needed. I use agricultural nonwovens. It is cheap and large area. I bought a circle cutter for this purpose.

Mounting

The "large corner angle" and "small corner angle" are screwed and fixed to the 70x40cm sized LACK from IKEA where the laser cutter is placed. The blue board in the following image is not a printed part but 300mmx200mm MDF. One "mid mount" and two “end mount”s are screwed to this MDF and the tube is placed there.

The following are pictures of what I actually made. One end is attached to the laser cutter body using the hose that came with the laser cutter, and the other end is attached to a vacuum cleaner by cutting the hose that came with the vacuum cleaner into two pieces and using a hose band.

Conclusion
結論

It was difficult to make the deodorizer, but the effect was great. The odor is so low that it is almost undetectable. The problem is that the vacuum cleaner is very loud in operation.
