When I was younger I made a few of them out of paper. Now I thought it could be made using 3D printing with all the frames around the wheel in “one” go. OK, with color-change. And since we have 3D printing available, I thought that a zoetrope 3D could be made with 3D shapes instead of images.

So let me introduce 3D printed ZOETROPE 3D with 16 “frames” and center pin around which it can rotate using stick or string. This zoetrope is printed flat and after removing it from the bed you just carefully fold the frames to the vertical position (see video). Every frame is on the living hinge connected to the main disc. Note that these hinges are not intended for multiple bending.

The wheel is quite compact and can be printed on Prusa MINI.

My animation is just a starting demo where you will see two oppositely rotating sticks. But I would love to see what you can come up with. For example, a human in motion?

Just take the blank wheel in files below and add your stl with shapes in the slicer. Keep in mind that you need to stretch all shapes to the sides before placing them on the wheel by about 50%. This is because the shapes become narrower during animation.

Printing:

Print the first layer with “concentric” infill (simply set the bottom fill pattern to “concentric”), because it is good to have the nozzle paths perpendicular to the living hinges!!!

I reccomend PLA for the material and 0.2mm layer. Print the first layer black (or some dark color), because from an optical point of view it is then better to look at the animation through the slots. Then print with some light color (or let the black on) and another color-change should occur after 1mm layer. This will be the color for all the shapes. (see the model in the video or look into the .3mf file in PrusaSlicer)

Tips:

1/ Paint the middle pin black so that it does not visually interfere.

2/ Try to spread the shapes evenly around so that the center of gravity remains in the middle of the zoetrope.
