I have been putting LED light strips up for my parents for the holidays for about 7 years now. Normally, I will just use the inset of the window to mount the lights after we take our window screens out. The problem with this method was that the adhesive on the back of the strips wore out after the first year. In subsequent years, I've mounted them with transparent tape. Visually, it's not a bad solution because the tape is clear to the eye unless the light reflects at a certain angle and glare happens. However, it does make installation and teardown a project even before considering that you have to clean up the tape residue too. Another factor is that these strips are not exactly durable enough to withstand repeated installation. My strips only lasted a few years before they broke. Neither of my parents have wanted to set up the lights for fear of messing them up.

Years ago, I had an idea to mount them to frames just like the screens we have in our windows to keep out debris and bugs in the warmer months. This year, I finally decided to actually do that. Now, instead of having to install them repeatedly on each window inset, I can just put up the new LED strip frame as I take down the window screens in winter. I have three rooms that I need a set for. After I cut to size the screen frame kit from the hardware store, I cut and mounted the strip on each frame. Each room I'm doing has two windows, so I cut the strip and made a JST connection with wires traveling in a white wire loom to the other frame in the room to continue the sequence. Putting up Christmas lights will now be a simple task that both of my parents will be able to do even as they age.

The printed parts with these frames are because the living room and the two bedrooms I am doing were updated at different times and contain different window insets. The bedrooms need extra depth to keep the frames from rattling. After making the ones for the bedroom, I decided that I kind of liked the idea of adding clips to give additional support to the adhered light strip in the case that the adhesive ended up failing over time.

Files:

  • WindowFramesClip_Bedrooms.stl - These are designed so that the inside of clip holds on to the LED strip to give it extra security in the case the adhesive fails. The other side clips onto the outside of the frame.
  • WindowFramesClip_LivingRoom.stl - These are basically the same thing as the bedroom clips with one difference. One arm is shortened because I do not need to add extra depth to have the frame fit securely. For this variation, the modified arm is shorted to fit into the groove where the spline for the screen is.
