This slug trap consists of three parts:

  • The ring shaped 'feeder' is placed on the garden ground and is filled with slug pellets (based on Iron III phosphate).
  • The 'peg' is pierced through the middle hole of the feeder and holds everything safely in position. The peg can also be filled with some beer (best left over or expired one) or (beer yeast, see below) to increase the attractiveness of the trap. However, the beer in this trap design is not intended to drown the snails, as in other slug-traps.
  • The 'roof' is put on top of the peg and serves to protect the slug pellets from rain and from being eaten accidentally by birds or other animals.

Best place one snail trap at each corner of the vegetable patch so that attracted snails from outside do not plough through the entire vegetable patch before they find the trap.

Further recommendation

Instead of the beer (in the ‘peg’) which can evaporate very fast on hot summer days, I have also made good experience with dry (beer-)yeast as an attractant. This can last for very long, and attracts the slugs even if it's dry.

Printing

No support needed

0.3mm draft resolution is functionally sufficient

Filament material: For the roof I recommend using ASA or ABS, as on very hot summer days PLA can get too hot and can start to distort. Also PLA doesn't like UV radiation very much…
For the other two parts, ‘feeder’ and 'peg' PLA is ok as they are protected by the roof.

Update from May, 2022

After two years of sucessful operation of several slug buffets in my home garden I've experienced some small weaknesses in the roof design, which I have now improved (see roof_improved.stl). The original roof is still under the files (roof_old.stl).
