I whipped this out quickly and thought I'd might as well upload it.

For those that already have a habit of germinating their avocado seeds: It goes just as easy with mangos (Side note: I use the zip lock method described here and place it in water after germination for it to develop some roots). The only problem is that mango pits aren't shaped as well for growing in water.

Basically half of my germinated mango seeds died because they fell into the water, off the glass or lifted out of the water. Well, now that I have a 3D printer not anymore.

This seed holder holds the pit securely in the water while fitting all normal sized water glasses.

How to print

I printed it with PLA. It should take about 2-3 hours and needs support. I personally only needed a 10% infill but if you have smaller pits you should maybe go up with it to keep the holder from floating up.

Disclaimer

This is only a first attempt born out of necessity because my previous workaround failed me once more. I already have some improvements in mind:

  • Should go deeper into the glass
  • The holder thingy is still wider than it needs to be
  • It's a bit over-engineered atm and I want to make it a bit more simplistic.
  • We'll see if I'll be able to pull out the seed through the small hole once it has a good root system.

Oh, and: first real model. So feedback and ideas for improvement are more than welcome!
