This is a document scanner (or document camera), made by ‘upcycling’ an old phone (Samsung Galaxy S3 Neo, which comes with an 8 megapixel camera on its rear) and a surplus monitor stand (left over from a Dell monitor that is now attached to a multi-display stand on my desk). However, any phone similar in size to the S3 Neo should work and so should any monitor stand (perhaps using an adapter plate of some kind or by customizing the mounting holes of the model).
The advantage of using the monitor stand for this purpose is (apart from saving it from the landfill) its adjustments for height and tilt which come in handy to position the camera appropriately. The camera resolution of the S3 Neo (8 MP) is comparable to those of many mid-range document cameras available commercially. Simply install your preferred document scanner app and enjoy!
The phone is held in place (with its display facing up) by two of the brackets which in turn are mounted to the main part using two M3 screws (the bore diameter being such that they should be self-tapping).
