This minor tweak edits the moon gear (now a step down/drive gear) and the finger wheel bracket to add a stepper motor and driver to the mechanical planetarium.
I chose to do this in the PrusaSlicer as it allows for a bit of easy customisation for the new step down/drive gear hole and step down/drive gear fit should you run into trouble. All fits need to be free turning with no binding once greased.
Too loose and the gears will skip, too tight and the stepper will stall.
Be sure to use the Herringbone versions of the base gears as they will self-align the step down/drive gear in the drive train.
I printed in PLA at 0.2mm layers and 4 perimeters for strength.
Once printed, I placed the stepper and step down/drive gear into the bracket to mark and drill holes to mount the stepper. I used m3 countersunk screws with m3 nuts to secure and space the stepper up from the bracket. I have not tightened the stepper to the bracket - I feel like a bit of play is good - though I might come back and change this… YMMV!
Also, you will need to replace the finger wheel axle with an idler axle.
