Worried about the printer being off, but the controller remaining powered from your USB host? If you run a Raspberry Pi, PC , or Sonic Pad you may need one of these. You can buy individual ones off of Amazon and the like, but for nearly the same cost as 1 or 2, you can build 10.
This model is designed for the following breakout boards.
USB Breakout Board Type A Male Plug: https://a.co/d/1wQrZvz
USB Breakout Board Type A Female Plug: https://a.co/d/adNuFNV
The model requires 4 x M3-8mm hex socket cap screws/bolts to keep it all together. I used an M3 tap to create threads and allow the bolt to fit nicely (printed in ABS). If you are doing PLA you might be able to self-tap without stressing or breaking the shaft. There is enough room for the PCB but once tightened up it will mechanically secure them in place.
Please note when soldering, that only 3 of the 4 pins need to be connected (GND, D+, D-) leaving the VCC (5V+) disconnected. To solder I partially screwed in the bolts to hold the boards in place. I soldered bare solid core wire to bridge the boards, but you can use any technique you're comfortable with. Just keep in mind there isn't room on the bottom for excess wire. I suppose if flip it and soldered on what will turn into the top side, you could have some excess there. Ultimately up to you, but check continuity to be sure you have no shorts.
I'm using mine with a Pi 4 and two Pi 3's running Klipper FW. If you add them while they are on, you will need to restart the Klipper FW to reconnect. Good luck and enjoy.
