The is the new driveshaft that will be used in my RC Car V2, five times ! It drives the wheels (that's 4) and is also used for the front transmission.
The overall length is ca 60 mm and it is still a double universal telescopic joint.
There are no screws and no glue is used. The sliding yokes are embossed with the letter S and conveniently the shaft that connects the yokes is an octagonal shaft whereas the wheel shaft has a another shape (quite foolproof).
Mounting instructions:
- Snap one cross into the regular yoke and then snap the other side of the cross into the sliding yoke
- Insert the small pins in each hole in the yokes and the cross (4)
- Repeat for the other cross + yoke + sliding yoke assembly and then add the pins
- Finally connect the 2 U joints with the shaft (you might need to sand it a little)
Now in case you are wondering how I was able to get rid of all the screws compared to my previous design (RC car V1) here is the answer:
The screws in the driveshaft were a major annoyance when you needed to access the differential; so with this design you only need to mount the driveshaft on the sun gear axle and then the driveshaft is blocked by the wheel axle which in turn is blocked by one single screw in the knuckle (constraining the minimal length). When suspension or steering need it, the drive shaft can expand but it will never shrink.
Surprisingly it is quite strong.
I'm providing the print file for 2 driveshafts.
