Shakyamuni and Maitreya

With the hand gestures of fearlessness and gift-giving, Shakyamuni (the historical Buddha) displays a benign smile. Two bodhisattvas and two disciples flank him, all standing against a mandorla (halo shaped like an almond) adorned with a stupa and flying beings. Buddha sits in a pensive pose with his head tilted under twin sala trees on the reverse side. Shakyamuni's first meditation or Maitreya's meditation is reserved for this position. Northern Qi period steles often depicted Shakyamuni and Maitreya (the future Buddha) side by side.
