Short version :

This is a re-mix of an earlier re-mix I made; this re-mix has "tighter" rings. Can be printed in multiple colors.

Much longer version :

The original version of this by Marvin is a clever idea but I can never leave well enough alone. I made a previous remix which was basically a thinner version of the Marvin design; I also experimented with multicolored printing via filament switching.

The original Marvin design is essentially a series of nested spheres with top and bottom parts of the spheres "cut off." The spherical design allows the rings to rotate in all directions without falling apart. The "thick" design requires that the nested rings be printed in place; this in turn means that the clearance between rings cannot be arbitrarily small or the rings will fuse together during printing.

My first re-mix essentially copied Marvin's design, but I made the rings thinner. I still did a nested rings print in place, but since the thinner rings could be taken apart and re-assembled there was a possibility of printing each ring in a different color.

But since printing each ring in a different color meant printing them one at a time, I could now redesign the rings to fit more tightly. (Finally - talking about this re-mix!). Making the rings fit tighter was done in two ways: First, it was no longer necessary to print the rings with "clearance" between them - I could print with zero clearance. Second, I changed the ring profile from circular to elliptical (nested ellipsoids instead of nested spheres). The elliptical profile allowed for a tighter "grip."

Print instructions

Print in PLA using the provided 3mf file to print all of the rings at one time. Otherwise :

  • elephant foot compensation = 0.6mm
  • 0% infill
  • concentric top and bottom

To put the printed rings together (see photo on center and fist ring), insert the smaller ring "sideways" (orthogonal) into the larger ring, and then rotate into place.

The rings are very tight at first, but loosen up a bit as you rotate them "sideways," although they still seem to stay reasonably firm.
