3D Printed tools for making soil blocks.

Files and Configurations:

Each soil blocker configuration is designed in two parts: the block tray, which holds the soil, and the stamp tray which compresses the soil to form the blocks.

Currently available configurations:

  • 1x8 grid of 1-inch cells
    • Rounded bump for planting seeds
  • 1x8 grid of 1-inch cells
    • Rounded bump for planting seeds
  • 1x1 single 3-inch cell
    • 1in cube bump, to allow the planting of a smaller seed block within this one

Need soil blocks in a different size or quantity? Leave a comment, and I can upload a new variant!

How To Print:

Print the block tray upright, with the bottom of the block forms on the bed. You will need to use supports for the tabs/handles on the sides.

Print the stamp tray upside-down, with the obvious flat edge against the build plate.

For print settings, I used 4 perimeters to ensure strength, and 20% cubic infill.

How To Use:

To fill the molds, insert the stamp tray into the block tray, far enough that the tops of the parts are level, as show here:

Then, placing your hands over the top of both models (to keep the stamp from being pushed out), hold them at an angle and scrape soil up into the block tray, doing your best to fill each cell evenly and completely.

After the cells are filled, set the device down where you want your finished blocks to be. Holding the tabs/handles with your fingers, press down on the top of the stamp-tray with your thumbs, compacting the soil and forming the blocks. After you have compacted the soil sufficiently, and there doesn't seem to be much give, pull up on the tabs/handles with your fingers to push the blocks out the bottom of the mold.

With any luck, your well-formed blocks will be left on your desired surface.

If you have trouble bringing the stamp-tray back up to the top, you can flip the whole thing over, again holding the tabs/handles with your fingers, and press on the bottom of the stamps with your thumbs to get it un-stuck.
