TPU is a great material but certain structures are impossible to print without supports.
A good example is an egg as the angles mean it can’t be printed in one piece, unless you use tricks, in this case a jig.
How to Print
- Load PLA filament for the jig. This is used as it won’t stick to the TPU.
- Print the jig.
- Load TPU filament for the egg.
- Print the egg until the filament change. This happens halfway through to pause the print.
- Remove the perimeter and the egg half, but leave the locator pins on the bed.
- Put the egg half in the jig. Ideally put the egg’s seam at the 3 o’clock position.
- Put the jig over the pins on the bed, remembering the seam position.
- Finally, unload and reload the TPU to continue printing the top of the egg.
note
The .3mf has the top layer of 1, a bottom layers set to 0, 0% infill, and “Ensure vertical shell thickness” turned on. This gives the best balance of structure and squishy.
