We re-use the seedling trays which we purchased years ago, and found that simply putting new soil in the compartments did not work great when it was time to transplant the seedlings as the soil would all fall apart. Especially if it is only potting soil.

Instead, we started using Coco coir mixed with potting soil and I printed out a single press which allows the soil to be well packed and hold its shape. After the success of the single press, I created this 6 spot press which allows much faster production of the plugs. When pressed in they stay together quite well and only require a small amount of coco coir to bind them together prior to roots growing.

To use:

Mix Coco coir and potting soil in a tub with plenty of water.

Grab a handfull of mixture and squeeze excess water out

Firmly pack soil mixture into mold with main body on a flat surface. Note: do not have the lower piece in place for this step.

Once the mold is full to the brim, push down with the top piece which will help create firm soil plugs while allowing the excess water to drain away.

Push the mold down onto lower piece to pop the molded soil out of the mold body and then place soil plugs in seedling tray.
