Description

Translated into English with the support of ChatGPT.

Born as an experiment to reduce the size of a trumpet and partecipate in the Prusa contest. Modify it to improve its sound, but for now, I advise against printing it as it is.

The principle I propose is based on creating an internal chamber with higher pressure. This reduces the speed of sound, allowing for a lower fundamental frequency compared to a tube of the same length.

I designed the mouthpiece inlet for this model: https://www.printables.com/it/model/300537-bocchino-per-yamaha-7d4d-cr-7d4d/comments/869195

Theory

To achieve a decent sound, certain formulas and fundamental concepts need to be considered. I may have made mistakes in my understanding, so feel free to point out any errors or even if this project is unfeasible.

Fundamental frequency

This instrument can be considered a resonance chamber similar to a semi-open tube, as it involves the contact of human lips through the mouthpiece.

The fundamental frequency is given by:

f = nv/4L

Air pressures in the instrument

I created a larger chamber with a narrower outlet. According to Bernoulli's principle, the air inside the larger chamber/tube has lower speed and thus higher pressure. Note that to achieve a higher pressure in that chamber, the outgoing flow must to be obstructed by a narrower section compared to the inlet (thus, the outlet section needs to be further reduced from the uploaded model).

Speed of sound

The speed of sound decreases in higher pressure air compared to atmospheric pressure. When the sound wave passes from a higher pressure tube to a lower pressure tube (toward the outlet), it gets reflected. Since the refractive index of the firs tube is higher, there is no phase shift, allowing the sound wave to increase in intensity as it reflects and adds to the generated wave.

refractive index = atmospheric pressure sound speed / actual sound speed

sound speed (adiabatic condition) = Medium compressibility modulus / Pressure

Areas of focus for improvement (follow your intuition as well)

  • Calculate the exact tube length for the desired fundamental frequency (which should be high for such a short tube)
  • Experiment with the internal chamber geometry and constrictions to lower the frequency as much as possibile
  • Explore bell geometry variations
  • To produce other tones, theoretically, the tube length needs to be adjusted, but I believe it's possible to regulate the pressure, and thus the velocity, and consequently the frequency. Unfortunately, I haven't found information about the human diaphragm's capacity yet.
Let me elaborate on the last point with an example

Assuming a tube length of approximately 0.15 meters, the fundamental frequency at atmospheric pressure is 550 Hz (considering a sound velocity of 330 m/s). Rounded to 554.37 Hz, which corresponds to C#5 (Do5#).

C5 (Do5) has a frequency of 523.25 Hz. To achieve this frequency, the air speed should be:

v = f * 4L = 314 m/s

This speed difference can be obtained with an increase in pressure given by:

new pressure / atmospheric pressure = (E / new speed) / (E / atmospheric speed) = atmospheric speed / new speed = 330 / 314 = 1.0509. In other words, the pressure generated by the diaphragm needs to be 5.1% higher than atmospheric pressure. I believe it is feasible.

To cover the entire scale, for example, from C5 to C4 (D5 to Do4), the calculation in simpler. The frequency of C4 is half that of C5, so the air velocity should be halved, implying a pressure increare of 50% compared to atmospheric pressure. Here, I begint to have doubts about the diaphragm's capacity.

Thank you for following me this far.

Descrizione in ITALIANO

f = n*v / (4*L)

Pressioni dell'aria nello strumento
