This work is heavily inspired by the great Kytor Industries shell, but has been remade entirely from scratch in order to fit my smaller printer bed.
I chose to not have a top shell, as I like the look of the PCB, which doubles as a slot indicator as the names are written on it. The fit is very tight still and should prevent most of the dust from entering.
I also made a GB slot cover (optional) to further prevent dust from getting in.
Lastly, I did not want to have the N64 plug clip into the shell, as I think it makes maintenance harder. So instead the plug will be blocked with a small printed part screwed into an heat set insert.
If you intend to build one, here is the list of parts to order: https://github.com/sanni/cartreader/wiki/What-to-order
I you intend to build one or have already build one, here is some different parts you will need:
- 18mm long M2 female-female spacers, 3mm in diameter (19mm will work, but the top PCB will be slightly proud) https://www.aliexpress.com/item/4001271908929.html
- two 1x40 2.54mm 19mm long(total length) male pin headers (19mm male pin headers will work fine with 18mm spacer, and 20mm headers with 19mm spacers) https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32911455899.html
- 6mm side switches (the shell is larger than the original) https://fr.aliexpress.com/item/1005004401308665.html?spm=a2g0o.order_list.order_list_main.53.41895e5bb5DgMI&gatewayAdapt=glo2fra
- 2x10cm cables if you don't want to bother and redo the connectors of the longer ones that come with the screen https://fr.aliexpress.com/item/1005003733065114.html?spm=a2g0o.order_list.order_list_main.64.41895e5bb5DgMI&gatewayAdapt=glo2fra
