Use this OpenSCAD generator to create your own custom size box.

Features:

  • Set the length and width of the internal cells
  • Set the number of rows and columns for the cells
  • Set the height of the inside of the cells
  • Set the height and thickness of the inside walls
  • Set the thickness of the lid and outside walls
  • Outside dimensions are automatically calculated
  • Latch designed for solid closing and easy opening
  • Program also includes design aids like color, cutaway, and lid rotation.
  • Set the clearances to work best for your printer

This generator is similar to my Print-in-Place generator, with these differences:

  • Base, Lid, and Latch are printed separately
    • Allows for bigger boxes (PIP requires both base and lid to fit on the printer bed)
    • Latch can be reprinted without a complete reprint
  • Latch is much more reliable
  • Lid may be as thin as 1mm (but I recommend not less than 1.6mm)
  • Use your slicer to support under latch rods or let this generator add it

I have made a 6 cell box (55x55x40) for knitting needle stoppers, and a 2 cell box for beads. I also made small proof of concept boxes. (Details for these boxes can be seen in the json file - which may be downloaded here but must be renamed to remove the “.txt” {Printables doesn't allow .json files}  and placed in the same directory as you install my OpenSCAD file.)

The only limits are the size of your printer and your imagination.

Slicing note

The hinge area should be solid - in PrusaSlicer set "solid infill threshold area" to 1000mm (see my 3MF file).

Printing note

The latch needs to be printed on its side. Brim is recommended.

Assembly

This box is meant to use a piece of filament for a hinge. (see my tutorial). You may also change the hinge diameter (up to 4mm) and use a different material such as a rod or wire.

Using OpenSCAD and the Customizer

If you are new to using OpenSCAD and changing parameters, I’ve included my tutorial that may help.
