Create mini PC out of your Raspberry pi 4 and official Raspberry 7 inch touch display. Inside box there is enough room to fit even battery for portable version. For cooling i would advice something like this or any other heatsink that fits into 18mm space (measured from raspberry bottom side of PCB to top of heatsink.
Project is inteded for use as small and portable PC for recording HAM connections using open source app iam also developing here. It is terminal UI based app so it should drain little to no power. If thinks will go well, i will upload step by step tutorial of how to make raspberry into terminal only PC booting into this (or any other) app when started up.
Other use cases that come to mind are, digital radio with touch screen interface for example or any other project. Options are endless :)
Optional lid
Display lid which doubles as small stand when device is placed inside. Lid holds itself just enough to not fall off but if you need some stronger “bond” i would advice to strap rubber band around. I believe that with this you can toss it into the bag and not worry about any damage.
Printing
I printed it with 0.4mm noozle with 0.2mm layer height on Prusa MK4.
I used 0.20mm SPEED profile with slight modifications for supports.
My print 3mf file is part of this upload.
Mounting
Display
You will need 3x M3x12mm screw with at least 1 washer each and possibly more. Depends on your particular display. Make sure you have enough and dont overtighten those screws as you may easily damage display. If screws go too deep they will crack it!
You also want to screw display electronic board to display using M3 screws instead of provided metal stands as raspberry is not mounted to that and it would only eat up space.
Raspberry pi 4B
There is 4x 2.5M screws and enough room for long ones. I used those that come with linked cooler and you can adjust for your needs in step file. Length depends on what you put on top of pi. Probably nut, there is enough room for even longer ones. Its up to you really.
Connecting them
Default short flex cable with 2 wires for power that come with display is all you need really. It is slightly tight loop inside so be carefull but no problems there. If you want to be super sure you can buy slightly longer flex cable but it is not necessary.
Notes
Display mount is based on official technical drawing of display as one that i originaly found online had wrong dimensions which resulted in failed print :-/
Note that according to source document dimensions has 0.2mm tolerances so it is possible that not all dimensions will fit precisely. There is acounted for that in model so it should allow some room even for centering display on box but your milage may warry.
Inside box there is also enough room for any additional HW you may want to connect to GPIO like battery box for example.
Feel free to check it out and let others see your creations.
TODO (Future versions)
- One idea is to have box openable as small notebook.
- Improve: Currently needs some angled surface to lay on top of as currently display lays flat without it and has bad colors due to viewing angle.
- Add battery charger circuit hoolder with hole for charging port so whole think can be battery powered easily.
