I got tired of having a random chunk of 2x4 with holes drilled in it, and made myself a modular holder for my router bits. It comes in two sizes - “wide” for large moulding bits, and “regular” for straight and dovetail cutters, which can fit closer together. They are angled at 45 degrees, so it works on a horizontal or vertical surface. There's a keyhole on the back for mounting on a wall.
