Needed this for work, when the speakers on stage only have a minute left to finish their presentation. It's big enough to be readable from several meters away.

I used a white sign with red letters, but any colors will work as long as the contrast is high enough.

Recommended print settings

  • 2 Perimeters/Walls
  • 5 Bottom/Top layers
  • 15% infill
  • 0.2mm layer height (this crucial for the Tools version, otherwise the tolerances aren't correct)
  • Wall generator: Arachne

How to print in multiple colors?

This model has multiple parts that I printed this with my MK3S+ without MMU, so I had to tell the printer explicitely to change filament for each different part.

For Prusa MK3S+, simply use the .gcode file I supplied.

Below you find these steps to slice it yourself:

  1. Set the printer up: (Source)
    1. In "Printer Settings"-->"General":
      • Set "Extruders" to the desired number of colours
      • Enable "Single Extruder Multi Material"
    2. In "Print Settings"-->"Wipe tower", disable "Prime all printing extruders".  Since we're manually changing filaments, there's no need to do this.
    3. In the "Printer Settings"-->"Custom G-code"-->"Tool change G-code" section, put the following: {if layer_num >= 0}M600 ; change to filament for extruder {next_extruder + 1}{endif}
  2. Import the .stl file and split into parts
  3. Assign the 4 letter parts to extruder 1 and the main part to extruder 2 (The order is important here)
  4. Make sure that the color for the letters is loaded in your printer, since it will start with that "extruder"
  5. Send to the printer
  6. You'll need to swap the filament 4 times

Important update on slicer settings (31 May 2024)

Previously, I advised some other changes to the printer settings regarding filament extraction. I had quite some issues with these settings, so I reverted them back to the defaults. These settings were “Cooling tube position”, “Filament parking position” and  “Extra loading distance”

Too big or too small?

Should be easily scalable in x and y direction, the letters are big enough for that. I recommend not changing the width of the sign; the letters are 0.4 mm thick (2 layers).

The current model won't fit on any bed smaller than a MK3S+ print bed.

Please leave a make!

I'm happy to see what you make of it. Got any questions, let me know!
