In Virgil's epic poem, the Aeneid, Laoëon was a priest of Poseidon who attempted to expose the treachery of the Trojan Horse by striking it with a spear. However, he and his sons were killed after their discovery. In Sophocles' tragedy, Oedipus Rex, Laoëon was a priest of Apollo who should have been celibate but had married.
