I teach High School science and find that manipulatives for my urban students help solidify learning. Valance electrons can be difficult to understand and how they bond to other atoms. I am not teaching them the orbitals nor their correct configuration at this point in the class. Students are just learning to idenitfy which atoms bond together based on their group numbers.
These pieces do not have chemical symbols on them, I will be placing some contact paper ontop of my pieces and having students write on that with wet erase markers.
