What I have learned thus far.
for an item such you can select displacement just on the z axis in blender.
when producing pics in stable diffusion I have found that sticking with black and white (instead of using grayscale and depth map) in the prompt seems to create less of a mess. The gray scale and depth map induced images create a ton of noise when applying the details with displacement.
