I designed this project for one of my professors as a simple-to-manufacture device for teaching basic stepper motor control principles and potentially GCODE practice utilizing a microcontroller running GRBL.

Design Notes:

  • The entire design is assembled using (18) M3 x 15 cap-head screws and (10) matching hex nuts. The motor couplers are held to the motor shaft with (2) smaller M3 screws and  (2) matching hex nuts.  (https://www.mcmaster.com/91290A572/ and https://www.mcmaster.com/90592A085/)
  • The laser cut components were undersized with the kerf of my Makerspace's laser in mind, but due to focusing and beam width, this could vary day by day. If you don't want to drill out the holes, the SolidWorks files have been included to modify at your discretion.
  • The motor coupler part has been designed to have a screw clamping it to the motor shaft and a press fit on the knobs of the Etch A Sketch. These fits were successful when printed with my printer, but again if you need to tweak the tolerances, the SolidWorks files have been included.
  • Lastly, I gave the whole assembly adhesive rubber feet so that it could stand upright. These can be omitted if preferred, but they can be found here: https://www.amazon.com/Rubber-Anti-Skid-Shock-Absorbing-Protection/dp/B01LDLJF5K/.
